Megatreat Liquid Terracotta

Surface Preparation

  1. Apply to a clean, dry surface. If the surface is dirty, clean with a high pressure water cleaner, remove any oil stains from the surface and allow to dry.
  2. Rough and grooved surfaces will need to be topped with 2.5 sand to 1 cement and 40:1 crosslink concrete additive (or similar), or topped with megatreat textured primer coat, making sure that the surface is smooth so as to prevent "bleed through" under the tape (when it is applied). Steel trowelled and float finished concrete requires acid etching.
  3. For colored grout joints (optional) other than the original cement color, coat the entire surface with Megatreat Primer Basecoat and Sealer, allow to dry 24 hours.
  4. To create tiled effects, use Meagtreat Tile Tape. We recommend 450 mm square tile pattern, which is very much in vogue for terracotta tiles and is also a lot less work than smaller tile patterns.
  • Mark the floor with a pencil in 450mm increments along the side, mark the opposite side the same, then repeat this operation for the other two opposing ends.
  • Use Megatreat Tile Tape to join these marks, creating the tile effect as such ...

Applying Liquid Terracotta

  1. Select terracotta shade, remembering that the terracotta becomes a shade darker when the satin or gloss sealer is applied. For tips on using a different shade of terracotta, see the Megatreat White Terracotta section.
  2. Cut in with a good quality brush first.
  3. Roll first coat using a medium nap roller and allow to dry.
  4. Apply a second coat as per the previous 2 steps. Allow to dry.
  5. For a deeper joint (optional), and to give a more realistic "real tile look", apply a third coat and allow to dry 1 - 2 hours depending on weather conditions.

Finishing The Surface

  1. You can achieve such effects as an aged look, mottled look, etc, after applying the Liquid Terracotta, and before lifting up the Tile Tape. For tips on applying these effects, see the Megatreat White Terracotta section.
  2. Carefully pull up tape starting with the last section that was put down.
  3. Sweep up or vacuum all dried terracotta pieces that come off from the taped area.
  4. Seal the surface using Megatreat Satin, Gloss or Natural Sealer, for tips on applying the sealer, see the Megatreat Sealer section.
Megatreat White Terracotta

Shades of terracotta

  1. The shade of terrcotta may be varied by mixing White Liquid Terracotta with original Liquid Terracotta at differing ratios (see the White Liquid Terracotta shade chart) before applying the Liquid Terracotta to the surface.

Different Effects
Remember to always apply effects to a small test area first to perfect the method and the look required. If you make a mistake, you can easily go back over the test area with a top coat of Liquid Terracotta and start again.

  1. Aged Look - After applying the last terracotta coat, and before you pull up the Tile Tape, make a white wash consisting of 2 parts White Liquid Terracotta to 1 part water. Mix thoroughly, then this wash should cover about 6-8 m2 per litre. Using a sponge squeegee mop, dip into white wash and squeeze out, then apply a light coat in long sweeps. Go back before this dries and squeegee off any excess white wash, then allow to dry. The surface may look too white, but a lot of the white wash disappears when the sealer is applied. Another interesting effect is to only apply the white wash around the outside edges of the "tile", which gives the effect of ageing the edges of the "tile".
  2. Mottled Look - The white wash can be tinted any color using standard tinters. To achieve the mottled look, apply 2 or more different color washes (eg. first coat with a white wash, second coat with a yellow ochre wash). Apply first wash thinly over entire surface, then apply second wash as a highlight over the first wash. Use your imagination to create different effects by tinting the White Liquid Terracotta with various colors and applying them in different directions, you may also want to try using a roller or sea sponge for interesting effects.
  3. Textured Look - The roller naturally leaves a textured finish, this can be varied by using different nap rollers. Tinted coats can be sponged on and wiped off, leaving the tint only in the hollows of the texture. Alternatively, apply the White Liquid Terracotta or Tinted Terracotta undiluted with a thick, dry sponge mop, lightly brushing over the top of the texture only.

After achieving the desired effect on the test area, apply to the rest of the surface, allow to dry, remove the tape, sweep away any loose, dried Liquid Terracotta, then seal.

Megatreat Satin Sealer

Apply Megatreat Satin Sealer your new terracotta finished surface, which should be clean, dry and free from debris before applying the sealer. Apply at least 2 coats, but if the surface is to be subjected to high or heavy traffic, you may wish to apply a third coat.

  1. First Coat - Stir can well, then apply with a foam pad applicator or airless spray gun, and allow to dry. Coverage 12 - 14 m2 per litre.
  2. Second Coat - Allow a minimum of 2 hours before applying this coat. Then apply an even coat with a foam pad applicator or airless spray gun. Coverage 16-18 m2 per litre
  3. Third Coat - If a third coat is required, apply as per the second coat, with a coverage of about 18 - 20 m2 per litre
  4. Maintenance - Clean treated surface regularily with water and mild detergent. Megatreat Satin Sealer is resistant to many chemicals and staining compounds, and will usually prevent their penetration into the surface. Exterior low traffic areas may require a top-up coat after 3 years, simply wash down the area with water and detergent, rinse off, allow to dry, then roll or spray on a top-up coat. Interior traffic areas may require a top-up coat after 3 - 5 years or so, depending on the severity of the traffic.
    • Sealing Tile Tape - Steel trowelled or smooth finished concrete does not require tape sealing. To prevent "bleed through" under the tape,   seal the tape down with Megatreat Tile Tape Sealer using a 50mm roller. A 50 sq.m area with 450 mm squares requires 1 litre of sealer (make this extra allowance when calculating total sealer requirements)
Megatreat Tile Tape

Applying the Tile Tape is best carried out with two people ...

  1. Make sure you have marked out the surface at the desired interval on each of the edges.
  2. Have one person hold the tape down on the middle of the first mark, while the other person unrolls the tape, making sure to keep it taught. When reaching the opposite mark, stretch the tape slightly, and stick down onto the mark. Gently pat down the tape onto the surface, making sure it doesn't go sideways in the process. To stick down tape firmly, use a small 50 mm wide foam roller which fits a roller pole. Complete all tape lines as such.

You may also need to seal the tape to prevent "bleed through", for tips on applying the sealer, see the Megatreat Satin Sealer section.
